8 Reasons Why We Love Wool

It probably won't come as a massive surprise to hear that we love wool. It would however, be wrong for us to assume that you know why. So here are eight good reason why we love wool, and for that matter why we think you should like it too.

    Wool is:

    • Sustainable
    • A Natural Insulator
    • Breathable
    • Durable
    • Easy to Care for
    • A Safe Solution
    • Elastic
    • Multi climatic

Absolutely Fab: Great British Brands in the 50’s

The 1950s was truly a monumental decade!

As the wounds from the Second World War healed, the Cold War escalated. Sputnik was launched, the first nuclear plant turned on, Rock n Roll emerged and Jackson Pollock put the final nail in the coffin of the idea that you need to be able to draw to be and artist.

As rationing ended and restriction on production of non-essential items was lifted, Britain saw an explosion in popular culture. Fashion, music, technology, and with it consumerism, all went through the roof.

With the rise of consumerism came the rise of some truly iconic British brands: Persil, Oxo, Rowntrees Fruit Gums, Brylcreem and the Radio Times are but a few. Many that lived are no longer with us but this doesn't take away from the fact that the 50's saw the birth of a whole new type of creativity.

Happy Birthday to a Style Icon

50 this year, the E-Type Jag knows all there is to know about improving with age.

When it rolled off the production line 50 years ago, not only was the E-type achingly beautiful, it also happened to be the fastest sports car in the world. Aesthetics and engineering had combined perfectly to make something truly exceptional.

On its release Enzo Ferrari called it "The most beautiful car ever made". In 2008 the Readers of the daily Telegraph gave it the same recognition.

A timeless classic, The E-type's image is as lasting as it's engine is powerful.

    Happy Birthday to you!

“There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather, Only Inappropriate Clothing”

Whether you are born in the British Isles or not, live here long enough and the weather will at some point try to get you down. At the very least it will become a mild obsession.

And rightly so! How can you make plans when the weather changes on a six pence. Lets face it, even if the sun is in the sky it is most likely raining at the end of the street.

Clothing and courage is the key. Accept that the weather is more unpredictable than the national lottery, prepare yourself as best you can and get stuck in.

When it comes to the weather, anyone that wants to live in this 'green and pleasant land' will have to make the choice... leave, or learn to love it.

    The Peregrine Falcon

Aside from the fact that it has a fantastic name, there are two things you should know about the Peregrine Falcon.

    1. It is the fastest member of the animal kingdom (capable of reaching speeds of up to 202mph).
    2. It is believed to be the most widespread bird of prey on Earth. The extended Falco Peregrinus brood stretches from the Arctic Tundra to the Tropics. In fact, the only major ice-free landmass it doesn't call home is New Zealand. I wonder why?

A superb hunter, the Peregrine Falcon has been a friend to the 'rich and the famous' throughout the ages. An icon of the animal kingdom it is natures' engineering at its best. Its fair to say that there may be more beautiful birds, there are however none quite as 'effective'.

    Our New Chair has Arrived...

    ... And we love it.

When most people think of wool they think of a jumper. Not us. It is a fantastically versatile material that can be used in a whole range of different ways, not least to cover a good chair.

Our picnic bag and wine cooler make the most of wool's amazing ability to insulate. If you want to keep something cool, wool is what you need. Not a lot of people know that.

As for the chair... Sceptical? Why not come round to our showroom and give it a go.

    Land Rover, A Kindred Spirit

Not beating around the bush, we love the Land Rover. What is more, perhaps The Land Rover and Peregrine Clothing share a little common ground. You can dress a Land Rover up, or you can dress it down. They are strong and stylish, with just the right amount of rugged. If you need to brave the great outdoors all the better. And of course, look after them and they will be with you for a very, very long time.

Born of the same era as Peregrine, the Land Rover has long been a favourite for the military. Did we mention that we used to produce garments for the military too? Hosiery of all things!

The Best Logo Ever Designed, it’s Official

In April of this year Creative Review voted the Woolmark Logo as no one in the top 20 logos ever designed.

The result of a global design competition conducted in 1963 by the International Wool Secretariat, the logo was intended to 'hold consumer confidence and represent quality standards'. The chances are that you have never considered whether the logo actually achieved its goals. We are confident that if you think on it for a little while you will realise that it probably did.

It's a beautiful piece of art that ultimately stands for something good. We are proud to be associated with it.

    James Bond, Short Stories

Does James Bond need an introduction? A great British character penned by a great British writer (Ian Fleming) and delivered by a great British publisher (Penguin).

The James Bond bought to life in 'The Quantum of Solace' Short Stories is different. He is more real, rougher, a true rogue.

For all of these reasons, and that fact that this new edition is so beautifully bound, we love this book.

    The Union Jack

A bold design for an even bolder idea.

In essence, all flags are a type of brand. Not many though take on the task of representing a group of nations that, although geographically close, have historically been culturally at odds.

Developed in 1603 when James VI of Scotland inherited the English and Irish thrones becoming James I of England, the flag was designed to represent the union.

Now, 400 years on the Union Jack (also known as the Union Flag) broadcasts British values to the globe.

We stand beside it as a symbol of what is traditional, well crafted, fair and ultimately 'home-grown'.

  • William Morris

    William Morris

"If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."

William Morris was a voracious worker whose long list of lifetime achievements stretches from reviving the traditional textile arts in the 1800s, to setting in motion the events leading to the foundation of The National Trust. A painter, a poet, a writer, a designer, businessman and book publisher, William Morris was a champion of Arts and Crafts movement.

His company, Morris and Co., revolutionised our approach to interior design reviving traditional methods and driving them forward. His set up of the Kelmscott Press in 1891 enabled him to take the best of the past and use it to actively fashion the future.

On that note it seems appropriate to finish on another William Morris quote. "The past is not dead, it is living in us, and will be alive in the future which we are now helping to make."
